In the midst of wedding season, our founder Aerin Lauder will be celebrating her own 20th wedding anniversary. We thought it would be the perfect opportunity to ask her about bridal gown style, her own big day, and wedding gift inspiration.
It’s your 20th wedding anniversary this June—what’s your most enduring memory from
My most enduring memory is of my dress and bouquet. Everyone always dreams about being a bride and I love the duchess-satin Oscar de la Renta gown I wore with simple pearl earrings and a Lily of the Valley bouquet.
After having children, launching AERIN, and gaining experience of life as a working mother—what advice would you give your 26-year-old self as she gets ready for her wedding day?
I’d say enjoy every minute and feel comfortable. It’s a special day and you should do it the way you want. Everything, including the menu, flowers, and music should be your choice and not your wedding planner.
Which recent weddings do you consider the most beautiful?
Stylist Caroline Sieber and Fritz von Westenholz’s wedding in Vienna, Austria, was simply breathtaking. She wore custom-made Chanel couture.
Vogue editor, Mollie Ruprecht’s marriage to Alexander Acquavella on St. Barts was the perfect island wedding. She wore a custom Valentino gown.
Actress Gabriella Campagna married Mario Milana at her grandparents’ magical country house in Cali, Colombia. She picked a fairytale lace dress by Vera Wang.
Helena Bordon and Humberto Meirelles’s wedding in São Paulo was also beautiful. She wore the same Valentino dress that her mother, Donata Meirelles, the style director of Vogue Brazil, wore for her own nuptials.
Who are the wedding dress designers—established and new—you consider exceptional?
Always Oscar de la Renta. The Creative Director, Peter Copping’s gowns are extremely feminine and beautiful. Vera Wang’s creations are fashionable yet romantic. Erdem is also romantic, but with a bohemian feel.
Traditionally, for the 20th wedding anniversary, a china gift is given to a couple. Do you like to follow tradition when it comes to anniversary gifts or do you decide depending on the couple? Are there any particular pieces you like to gift on an anniversary?
I like to follow the gift traditions, however, after a few years it is nice to make up your own traditions. One year I gave a custom surfboard and another year I made a beautiful photo album of memories.
When it comes to wedding day gifts, what are some good ideas for gifting bridesmaids? Also, what are your wedding registry must haves?
I think the AERIN Shagreen Heart Box, Shagreen Heart Frame, and the Classic Shagreen Frame make lovely gifts for bridesmaids. Your wedding registry should be fun. Register for items you like and feel you would use. You can never have too many trays or picture frames. Another great registry idea is sheets—there’s nothing nicer than new sheets for a new home. Luggage is also a great choice.
