As a DJ and music stylist, Coleman Feltes knows all there is to know about music; it’s clearly his passion. He’s been curating playlists for AERIN events, showrooms, and the Southampton store since a friend introduced us—he’s my go-to music guy! Coleman understands the mood required for every occasion and finds the right tracks to help achieve it, which is why he’s so successful in the fashion industry and as a DJ. I always look forward to hearing his AERIN playlists and particularly love what he’s found for AERIN Southampton this summer.
How did you go about creating a playlist for the AERIN Southampton store and how would you describe it?
As much as I try to be super current with new artists, I think it’s important to go back to the classics to stay interesting. Timeless music is a quality I always look for. It’s not always about the newest, coolest artists; it’s about what is right for Aerin’s brand and identity. Many genres go into a playlist as long as it has that classic, sophisticated, current and even romantic feeling.
How did you make a career out of a passion for music?
I started collecting all types of music when I was in High School. I was so passionate about educating myself, hoping to find the songs that moved me. I began making mixed cassettes for friends and then finally got a mixer to DJ house parties and school dances. Playing in clubs naturally came next but I realized I loved telling a story with music, and because I was interested in so many genres I began DJing fashion shows, which led to working with brands, retail and media. There weren’t nearly as many DJs at the time and only a handful who understood the concept of music curation. I suppose that inspired me even more because of the impact that music has on visuals and atmosphere.
Does your personal taste constantly evolve, or do you continue to return to one particular favorite style of music? For instance, I read you had an early interest in soul.
Good question! I suppose I have developed a style that correlates to my tastes. Soul is the influence in everything for me but it’s not just soul the genre but that the vibration of the music has soul. You can just feel it. That said, of course we are all evolving in order to be present. In this business you have to be current and open to the change of sounds and styles. I love electronic-based music especially when it’s featured with live instruments. Soul, Indie and pop are incorporating more electronic elements. We are in the digital age.
Are there any particular musical artists who you think will dominate this summer?
I love Little Dragon—the new album, Nabuma Rubberband, is lush and beautiful. La Roux will be back this summer. Anything Pharrell produces, like Ed Sheeran, will be big.
