DESTINATION MAROMA

Travel Writer and Founder of Hotel Chic, Sara Bliss dishes on her recent trip to the Maroma Resort on Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

The Journey After a quick flight to Cancun (three hours from NYC) and a 30-minute cab ride from the airport, you are checking into your room with Maroma’s signature margarita in hand.

.

Location Set on 25-acres of preserved jungle, the hotel is nestled in an incredibly lush canopy of trees teeming with wildlife. You’ll see colorful exotic birds, lively monkeys swinging overhead, the occasional bat, and plenty of lizards when you walk through the property. Pair the lush backdrop with a wide, white sand beach, and the effect is totally magical.

 .

The Hotel Built in the 1980s as a dream home for architect José Luis Moreno, Maroma was transformed into a resort by Orient-Express Hotels in 1995. The 65 rooms all echo the chic white stucco and thatched roof architecture of the original building.

 .

The Rooms The property offers a wide range of room styles to choose from. There is the cozy, upstairs room in the main house with an expansive view of the ocean from the bed draped in mosquito netting to garden view rooms  shaded by a lush and blossoming canopy of foliage, set poolside. The one-bedroom suites boast their own private outdoor spa treatment rooms, gyms, and plunge pools. All rooms have terraces complete with amazing hammocks you won’t want to leave.

 .

The Beach
Although there are three pools, the beach is the real draw here. The wide-white sand shoreline features plenty of palapas, loungers, and plush outdoor beds for relaxing. The only downside is that while the hotel feels serene and entirely removed from the real world, there are two mega-resorts next door reminding you that you are not.

.

The Water The Great Maya Reef, the second largest in the world, spans over 600 miles, and is minutes away. Pair this with the nearby Cenotes, freshwater sinkholes carved by underground rivers, and you have heaven for divers and snorkelers.

.

The Spa The totally blissed-out guests you see exiting the 7000-square-foot Mayan-inspired Kinan Spa are proof of why Kinan is consistently rated one of the world’s best resort spas. (I can’t recommend it more highly). The unique menu includes Chi Kung Chinese Yoga, Ayurvedic consultations, and the signature Kinan Ritual, which involves local healing herbs and plants, heat, and a four-handed outdoor massage.

.

The Vibe While the hotel recently began accepting children, it’s really best suited for couples looking to escape and unwind. The vibe is very mellow, romantic, and quiet. Ideal for spa lovers.
