Light | Waves, Parrish Art Museum

Few artists have captured the power of the ocean quite like Clifford Ross, who photographed the waves off Long Island while in the surf, tied to an assistant on shore, for his Hurricane Waves series. Those photographs are included in the Light | Waves exhibition, which opened this month at the Parrish Art Museum. This immersive installation is part of the Parrish’s Platform series, in which a single artist uses the entire space to subvert boundaries in new and exciting ways.

Clifford Ross has included the exterior of the Herzog & de Meuron-designed building to exhibit his large-scale pieces, which appear in two categories: Hurricane Waves on Wood, which features large-scale prints from his Hurricane Waves series printed onto sheets of maple veneer; and Digital Waves, showing computer-generated wave simulations on LED screens. I particularly love the way he moves between the real and the abstract in his work—a must for anyone inspired by the sea.
