The creative genius of Rei Kawakubo, the designer behind Comme des Garçons, is the subject of this year’s spring exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Beautifully curated by Andrew Bolton, this exhibition gives real insight into the Kawakubo’s inspiring aesthetic. I highly recommend it.

The focus is on the Art of the In-Between—the exhibition’s title—in reference to the designer’s groundbreaking creations. I’ve always thought of her collections as sculptural; they occupy a space between art and fashion. The Costume Institute hasn’t recognized a living designer since Yves Saint Laurent back in 1983, which is testament to the significance and success of Rei Kawkubo and her brand.
