Interview with Lauren Bush Lauren

FEED, the charity you founded, has so far given away over 60 million meals to schoolchildren in 62 of the poorest countries in the world. How do you feel about that accomplishment? Did you ever expect those numbers when you began?

I’m thrilled with what we have been able to do. When we started FEED we truly had hoped we would have that kind of impact in 5 years, but didn’t quite believe it at the time.

I love that you paired your love of fashion with charity, starting FEED by designing and selling bags. When did you get the spark to merge the two?

It really was kind of one of those Aha! moments that you hear about. I had studied design in college and had internships in fashion. At the same time, I was involved in the United Nations World Food Programme. The idea came to me and it just made sense. I am so grateful to combine two things that I care about and love.

You have traveled all over the World as an Honorary Spokesperson for the UN World Food Program, what place had the most impact on you?

My first trip to Guatemala in 2003 was the most eye opening. I hadn’t personally seen that level of poverty and hunger. It is an incredibly beautiful country, but there was such malnutrition and poverty, it was really was shocking and surprising.

What are you most proud of in your life so far?

FEED. I am just so proud to get to help people by doing something I love. I feel like I’m cheating the system or something.

What do you carry in your (FEED) bag that you can’t live without?

My iPhone first and foremost. Lip balm. My COMME des GARÇONS wallet and my Ralph Lauren Ricki sunglasses.

What is a beauty tip that you learned from modeling days?

Keeping your skin really healthy and clean. That’s why I love your aesthetic as a person and with your AERIN beauty line. You aren’t about layering pounds of makeup, but keeping your skin clean and fresh looking.

You recently got married in Colorado. What is your favorite memory from that day?

I think the moment that I rode up on a horse and carriage to the wedding. The first time seeing David and my family was the most striking moment for me personally.

How has marriage changed your outlook?

I’m just grateful to be married to someone I love. I’ve been with him 7 or 8 years, he was a great companion pre-marriage, and now that we are married it is even better.

How would you define your style?

Classic and feminine, nothing too trendy or out there.

You definitely make style look effortless and easy. What are your wardrobe staples?

My classic burlap style FEED bag. A good pair of jeans like Levis. Ralph Lauren cashmere cardigan sweaters. Rag & Bone black pants.

What designers do you live in most?

Ralph Lauren, Theory, and Rag & Bone.

You live in New York, what is your favorite thing about living in the city?

Everything, the city so alive and so inspiring. To wake up every day and walk to work and feel that kind of energy is really inspiring.

What is your favorite undiscovered place in NYC?

Urban Space Meatpacking.  I love all the artisan and food vendors.

Where do you go to escape?

I go home. We have a very peaceful quiet home, so that is my number one escape.

What is on your iPod right now?

Mumford & Sons, old Neil Young, Avicii or Yo Yo Ma when I really need to relax.

What’s next for you?

FEED just continues to grow and evolve. We have some fun partnerships including Clarins and Sephora.  We have a Dean & Deluca gourmet filled FEED bag coming out. We also have a chocolate box with Godiva that is sourced from Latin America and Africa.
